    Humble Beginnings

    The story of Dean Morris Cards began long before the brand officially launched in 1999. Dean Morris, the creative force behind the brand, studied Fine Art at Wolverhampton University. After graduating, he found himself at a crossroads, unsure of his career path. During a trip to London, he visited a fancy arts store and was inspired by the array of handmade paper on sale. This sparked the idea to create handmade cards, an endeavor that initially began as a hobby.

    Dean started making cards for family and friends, customizing birthday, Christmas, and even Valentine’s cards. With no formal business plan or strategy, he relied on his artistic skills and a keen sense of humor. Armed with some paper, glue, sequins, and a lot of creativity, Dean’s handmade cards quickly gained popularity.

    The Birth of a Brand

    In 1999, with some help from a local artist’s foundation and guidance from The Princes Trust, Dean transformed his hobby into a part-time business, officially launching Dean Morris Cards. His early designs were a hit, and the business gradually grew. By the early 2000s, Dean had transitioned to a full-time career, dedicating himself to creating cards that stood out in the market.

    Dean’s designs were heavily influenced by his appreciation for retro aesthetics and his own sense of humor. He focused on creating cards that made people laugh, often using bold and cheeky phrases. This unique approach helped Dean Morris Cards carve out a niche in the industry, appealing to those looking for something different from the usual greeting card fare.

    Growth and Recognition

    Trade shows played a significant role in the growth of Dean Morris Cards. Dean attended his first trade show in 1999, and by 2000, he had a small stand at Earls Court, where he introduced his distinctive style of rude family photo cards. These trade shows provided valuable exposure and helped establish relationships with retailers. One of the early adopters of Dean’s cards was Selfridges in London, followed by the flagship Paperchase store on Tottenham Court Road.

    The transition from handmade to printed cards marked a significant turning point for the brand. While the handmade cards had charm, they were labor-intensive. Moving to printed designs allowed Dean to scale up production and meet the growing demand for his unique cards. Despite this shift, the essence of Dean Morris Cards remained the same—irreverent humor and retro charm.

    One of the brand’s most iconic moments came in 2010 with the resurgence of the World War II poster “Keep Calm and Carry On.” Dean Morris Cards was one of the first publishers to offer greeting cards based on this iconic design, working directly with Barter Books to use a detailed scan of the original poster. The response was overwhelming, with the “Keep Calm” cards outselling other designs nearly ten to one. Dean’s variations of the poster, including the popular “Shut Up and Deal With It,” further cemented the brand’s popularity.

    Dean Morris Cards continued to innovate, introducing a range of designs inspired by various themes, including his love of travel and flying. His cabin crew birthday cards became particularly popular, even among airline staff.

    A Lasting Legacy

    Today, Dean Morris Cards is recognized as one of the best-known humor card companies in the UK. Dean’s dedication to creating cards that make people laugh has remained unwavering. Despite the brand’s growth, Dean maintains a hands-on approach, often personally answering customer inquiries and ensuring that every card reflects his original vision.

    From handmade beginnings to a household name, Dean Morris Cards has successfully transformed the greeting card industry with its distinctive blend of humor and style. The journey of Dean Morris is a testament to the power of creativity, perseverance, and the ability to make people laugh.
