Dean studied Fine Art at Wolverhampton University, and upon graduating, found himself unsure of his career path. His journey took a pivotal turn during a visit to a fancy arts store in London, where he was inspired by the handmade paper on sale. This inspiration led him to start creating handmade cards, a hobby that would soon turn into something much bigger.

    Dean began by making cards for family and friends, customizing birthday, Christmas, and Valentine’s cards with his unique touch. Armed with paper, glue, sequins, and a boundless sense of humor, Dean’s creations quickly gained popularity among those close to him.

    From Hobby to Business

    In 1999, with encouragement and support from a local artist’s foundation and The Princes Trust, Dean decided to turn his hobby into a part-time business. Dean Morris Cards was born, without a formal business plan or strategy, but with plenty of creativity and passion. The early days were challenging but rewarding, as Dean balanced his new venture with other commitments.

By 2000, he had a small stand at Earls Court, where he showcased his distinctive rude family photo cards. These events provided invaluable exposure and helped establish relationships with key retailers.

    The shift from handmade to printed cards was a significant milestone. While the handmade cards had charm, they were labor-intensive and not scalable. Printed cards allowed Dean to meet the growing demand while maintaining the brand’s essence. This move also helped the brand secure placements in prestigious stores like Selfridges and the flagship Paperchase store on Tottenham Court Road.

    Iconic Designs and Cultural Impact

    One of the pivotal moments for Dean Morris Cards came with the resurgence of the World War II poster “Keep Calm and Carry On” in 2010. Dean was among the first publishers to offer greeting cards based on this iconic design, working directly with Barter Books to use a detailed scan of the original poster. The “Keep Calm” cards became a massive hit, outselling other designs nearly ten to one. Dean’s variations, like “Shut Up and Deal With It,” further solidified the brand’s popularity.

    Dean continued to innovate, drawing inspiration from his love of travel and flying to create new ranges, including cabin crew birthday cards. These designs resonated with airline staff and passengers alike, showcasing Dean’s ability to tap into niche markets with humor and style.

    Despite the brand’s success, Dean remains hands-on, personally answering customer inquiries and staying involved in every aspect of the business. This personal touch has endeared him to his customers, who appreciate the authenticity and humor that Dean Morris Cards brings to the table.
